Master Electricians Australia have announced their support for a new Queensland law which aims to stop the use of dangerous building products in the construction industry.

MEA Manager of Advisory Services, Jason O’Dwyer said the laws require people in the building supply chain or the construction chain report the use of dodgy products.

“If these products are deemed to be non-compliant with Australian standards, it will depend on where in the chain – whether that be the importer, the seller, or the designer or the architect – the responsibility for the use of the unreliable product lies,” Mr O’Dwyer said.

“At the MEA, we certainly want to make sure dodgy products are not being used, and Australian consumers can be confident with the electrical and building construction industry that any materials being used by tradies by designs, builders, architects etc, are fit for purpose. We want to make sure that they are suitable to use in buildings.”

Mark Peters, an apprentice Electrician for N&P Contracting, said he felt the new laws would improve for the safety of Queensland electrical workers  who already put their lives at risk on a daily basis by working with electricity.

“This is huge deal for all sparkies out there, I mean our lives are at risk everyday working the job we do, and use of dodgy products just increase this risk,” Mr Peters said.

“If non-compliant products are in use in building sites and homes, it increases the danger to both the sparky installing it, as well as the people who live and work in the site in which the product was installed.

“This new law could be saving potentially thousands of lives in the long run, so I and many other workers, as well as families can now rest assured that the products being used are all of higher quality.”

The new measures became law on the 31st August.
