Griffith University will lead the way among Brisbane’s tertiary institutions in its engagement with this week’s G20 Leaders’ Summit.

Central to Griffith’s G20 involvement is the University’s School of Humanities Media Centre, a thirty-student strong professional media contingent at the heart of South Bank.

Director of Griffith University’s Office of Marketing and Communications Dean Gould said the Media Centre is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Griffith journalism students to gain experience covering Brisbane’s largest international event of the past decade.

“What they are offering this week and last week is the opportunity for students to work alongside experienced journalists covering the G20,” Mr Gould said.

“I think it’s an absolutely fabulous and unique opportunity. I don’t think any other university in the world has taken advantage of this G20 opportunity in the way Griffith has.”

Griffith journalism student Joshua Wells said he is excited to work out of the Media Centre in the lead up to the G20 summit.

“It’s going to be a great opportunity. It’s a big week and we are all going to get some valuable experience out of it,” Mr Wells said.

Mr Gould said that Griffith University has positioned itself as the foremost Queensland tertiary institution for expert comment on G20 matters.

“More than half of any article or report on the G20 which refers to an academic or a university actually refers to Griffith or a Griffith academic,” Mr Gould said.

Mr Gould says Griffith University will use the G20 summit as an opportunity to engage with the Brisbane community and promote Griffith as a university of influence in south-east Queensland.

“We are hosting a number of events where we will engage the broader community and we’re supporting partners in events such as the Women in Leadership Conference and the Global Cafe, as well as the Strengthening Global Growth seminars,” Mr Gould said.
