Celebrations have begun for the 2013 Queensland Multicultural Week with an array of traditions, cultures, flavours and exhibits filling the streets of Queensland.

This week celebrates Queenslands’ rich diversity by highlighting the 220 cultures that call Queensland home.

Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander and Multicultural Affairs Glen Elmes said Queensland’s vast diversity is what brings the state together as a community.

“Queensland Multicultural Week is about bringing together Queenslanders from all backgrounds in a shared acknowledgement of our heritage and traditions – as well as celebrating the aspirations and values that bind us together as one community,” Mr Elmes said.

This years theme for the Queensland Multicultural Week Arts Exhibit, Diversity Rules, will be a display of artwork from 35 communities.

Art consultant Michael Howard said he enjoyed seeing the diverse display of art.

“The diversity of art on display this year is just extraordinary,” he said.

“I was overwhelmed by the exquisite nature of the European inspired paintings.”

The Queensland Multicultural Awards will take place on Saturday 7 August in recognition of those who volunteer and work to develop culturally diverse communities.
