Brisbane Broncos young gun Corey Oates has been offered a three-year deal with the club after a spectacular start to his first season.

Having scored five tries since his debut last month against the Storm, Broncos coach Anthony Griffin had no doubts offering the teenager the contract.

Oates said he was shocked with Griffin’s decision but would be happy to continue playing for the club.

“It’s a big surprise I am still there…I only thought I would get one or two games but [Anthony] has kept me on,” he said.

“It just shocked me and my family with what they wanted and how long they wanted me for.

“The first game I was a bit nervous but I am just happy to be here.”

The 18-year-old Baralaba boy was also recently named in the Holden Cup Under 20’s Team of the Year, being recognised as a key player.

“It was a big shock and I never saw it coming,” Oates said.

“It was the last thing on my mind.”

Brisbane is set to take on the Newcastle Knights at Suncorp Stadium tonight in an effort to move up the Telstra Premiership ladder.
