A young Australian baseball player attending college has been gunned down in a seemingly random act of violence in Duncan Oklahoma.

Chris Lane who was studying at East Central University on a baseball scholarship was murdered by three teenagers in a drive-by shooting while out running along Country Club Road.

Three teenagers aged 15, 16 and 17 were arrested and are being held in custody with probable murder charges to follow.

Reports from the local Duncan Police Department said the three young men allegedly drove up behind the victim and shot him in the back.

Police Chief Danny Ford told the Herald Sun that the youths spotted Mr Lane and decided to follow him.

“He went by and they saw him, and one or all three of them agreed that he was their target,” he said.

“They followed him, came up from behind, shot him in the back with a small calibre hand gun and sped off.”

Paramedics were called to the scene and Mr Lane was taken to a local hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after.

Police arrested the teens several hours later after the car was spotted in a church car park.

According to Chief Ford one of the youths arrested told police they did it.

“Two of them did not talk…but one of them gave the information they did do the shooting,” he said.

Mr Lane’s family was immediately notified by police.
