Unregistered eligible voters in Australia are reminded that registration for the Australian Electoral Commission closes at 8pm tonight.

Registered voting in Australian election periods is a mandatory requirement and legal obligation for citizens over the age of 18.

The importance of engaging younger voters has been a prevalent issue in the lead up to this years’ Federal election.

With many election policies pertaining to issues relevant to the younger generations, enrolling to vote is the only way they will able to have their say.

Electoral Commissioner Ed Killesteyn stressed the legal requirement to vote in elections in Australia.

“All Australian citizens aged 18 years and over are required by law to enrol and vote in the Saturday 7 September federal election,” he said.

“If you haven’t kept your enrolment details up-to-date you could have been removed from the electoral roll.”

It is also a timely reminder for all Australian residents to check that their details are up-to-date and correct prior to voting before the deadline closes tonight.

More information and registration forms can be found at the Australian Electoral Commission’s website.
